Unlike the annual common flax grown for oil and fiber, wild blue flax is a perennial with a long taproot. It blooms in July and August, with dozens of bright blue flowers about an inch long drooping at the tip of each stem. For many years, blue flax was called Lewis' flax in honor of Captain Meriwether Lewis. Members of the Lewis and Clark Expedition first discovered the plant in Montana. The flax can be found in the following states: all U.S. states except Alaska
