In 19th Century Japan, there was a folk tale about a cat-witch of Okabe who preyed on young girls who came to the temple in the late evening. This print by Yoshifuji creates the witch by assembling individual cats. the eyes being two bells that are usually found around cats’ necks and the mouth a thick ribbon as worn by cats.
