A kawara or Japanese roof tile is the inspiration for this earring. During the Edo period, the Shogunate ordered all inflammable roofs in Edo (Tokyo) be replaced with kawara tiles in an effort to stem fire danger. This decree greatly advanced the art and design of roof tiles.
