Geisha Metal Bookmark

Buffeted by the breezes along the Sumida river banks in Tokyo, this Japanese geisha wrestles with her multi-layered wraps. “Taking in the cool of the evening” was customary entertainment. This scene, painted by Hiroshige Utagawa, captures the essence of the so-called ukiyo-e "floating world" of 19th-century Japanese theater and street life.
