The world's first manned hot-air balloon was launched from a park in Paris in 1783. The spectators included the King of France and the U.S. envoy to France: Benjamin Franklin. The balloon traveled for twenty-five minutes and about five and a half miles and reached an altitude of 3,000 feet. After the flight, the pilots drank champagne, a tradition carried on by balloonists to this day.
