The roots of the painted cups of the Indian Paintbrush are partially parasitic on the roots of other green plants. Their true flowers are inconspicuous, but are commonly enveloped by bright red flower-like bracts. Its name comes from the fact that the feathery top of the plant resembles a paintbrush. Indian Paintbrush or Painted Cup was adopted as the State Flower of Wyoming on January 31, 1917. The brush can be found in the following states: WY, AZ, CA, CO, ID, MT, NM, NV, OR, UT
