An old-fashioned garden plant, cultivated in Europe and America since the mid-1600s, the Wild Columbine is rich in nectar. The flowers are pollinated by hummingbirds who are attracted to the red flowers which have long tubes with storage places for nectar at their ends. It can be used as an attractive addition to mixed salads. It is the State Wildflower of Massachusetts.
