An Interview with a Museum store professional: Dianne Birmingham

1.Where was your first Not-for- Profit/Museum job? Position? What did it teach you?

My first job at a non-profit was at an art center where I taught an evening art class after teaching as an art instructor in the school system during the day. It was most rewarding and taught me how individuals of all ages benefit from the joy of creating art. It made me realize how much I enjoy being involved in the art community.

2. Name a mentor that most influenced you: How did they help you?

There are many but I was greatly influenced by a kind, open minded and disciplined university art instructor, Professor Moss, who taught me how to see things differently.

3. What was your educational background? Was it useful?

I earned degrees from Moore College of Art and Edinboro University both in Pennsylvania. It was most useful and prepared me for the future positions I would have.

4. How did you get into retail?

After my career as an art instructor, I took a sales/ management position at a national retailer for 10 years. As much as I enjoyed that career and met wonderful people, I really missed the art world and wondered if there was a role that included both art and retail. I was so very fortunate to begin a career in The Dali Museum Store that I have thoroughly enjoyed for the past 31 years. It is now time to spend more time with family and pass the baton to someone who loves this work as much as I do.

5. What tips would you like to pass on to a future colleague:

Love the work you do each and every day. We typically spend more time working than the time spent with family and friends. So it makes sense to really enjoy your career and give it the energy it deserves.

And one day, you will look back upon your work life, as I am now, and cherish the many years of all of the exciting moments and treasured friends and colleagues you have met throughout your career.
