Matteo da Milano worked in 16th century Italy where he was known for his innovative borders. This border, from an illuminated manuscript done about 1520, shows how carefully he observed and drew flora and fauna, delighting powerful patrons like the Medici of Florence and the della Rovere, dukes of Urbino.
