This chain of monkeys was painted by Kano Tanshin in the 17th century in Japan. It is part of a scroll devoted to dozens of monkeys hanging together. The monkey scroll flanked a central scroll depicting the deeply revered Eight Daoist Immortals. The theme of monkeys was chosen to symbolize long life. In addition, the monkey's letter's in Japanese can be read as serendipity.
