Hokusai Cat & Butterfly Metal Bookmark

$18.50

Although cats were introduced to Japan from China or Korea by the ninth century, they were not common images in Japanese art until the nineteenth century. Their growth in popularity may have been stimulated by a nineteenth-century vogue for short-tailed cats, such as the one pictured here. This detail is taken from a handscroll of miscellaneous studies by Katsushika Hokusai (1760 -1849).
