Born in 1733, the son of a farmer, Maruyama Okyo moved to Kyoto and apprenticed in a toy shop painting dolls' heads. His exposure to European stereoscopes led him to Western art and a career blending it with Chinese and Japanese influences. Four of his Crane screens are Registered National Treasures of Japan.
