The cobblestones used in American cities reflect maritime history. These rectangular granite stones or Belgian blocks were initially used as the ship's ballast. In the early 19th century, when American cities began replacing the dirt and oyster-shell streets, they often chose Belgian blocks to do it. Today most city streets are paved, but there are still streets of cobblestone where cats jump puddles.
