Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island Bookmark

View of The Statue of Liberty from Ellis Island

National Parks of New York Harbor

This bookmark shows the deck of a boat arriving in New York Harbor and the immigrants eagerly getting their first view of Lady Liberty on their way to Ellis Island.

Ellis Island, located in upper New York Harbor, was the main port of entry for over twelve million immigrants between 1892 and 1954. Immigrants had to pass a series of medical and legal inspections before gaining entry into the United States. It has been estimated that nearly half of all Americans today can trace their family history to someone who passed through Ellis Island. Ellis Island is now one of the most popular tourist destinations in the National Park Service.
