In 1913, Vassily Kandinsky is credited with creating one of the first abstract works of art with his Color Study, Squares with Concentric Circles. This painting is a forerunner of the color field school of painting where color is freed from realism and becomes the subject in itself. Kenneth Noland, Barnett Newman and Mark Rothko were considered its chief exponents.
