The Japanese Cedar, also known as sugi, is the national tree of Japan and is central to Shinto shrines. Tall trees have special significance in Shinto shrines because, in the religion, they represent a connection between nature and man.

Before this shire stand a man and a woman. In red is the Miko, or shrine steward; in blue is a Kannushi, the Shinto priest.
