Elizabeth I was the daughter of King Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. Elizabeth became queen in 1558 and ruled for 45 years. The period became known as the Elizabethan era, a "golden age" that represented the apogee of the English Renaissance and saw the flowering of poetry, music, and literature. The period is most famous for its theatre, as William Shakespeare and many others composed plays that broke free of England's past theatre style.
