The combination of closely observed floral realism and elegant line makes this border created around 1525 an outstanding example of Flemish illuminated manuscripts and their use of trompe l’oel.
An illuminated manuscript is a handmade object, unlike the books made today. Its production moved successively through the hands of the parchment maker, the scribe, and one or more decorators or illuminators. Each artisan had his own style and eye, contributing to this unique piece of art.
