The White Oak (Quercus alba) matures in 200 or 300 years and is often as broad as it is tall. One of the largest trees of the Eastern forests, its close-grained, strong wood is ideal for barrels and furniture. Native American Indians made flour from the acorns and taught the early settlers to boil the acorns to make them more palatable.
