Meet our Founder
Dear Buyer,
In January of 2019, I went with my brothers, daughter, and other family members to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro in Uganda. For five days, we hiked the rainy flanks of the mountain at an altitude of 12,000 to 15,000 feet. On the sixth day, starting at 11 pm, we began the summit push. Our Ugandan guide Geoffrey gave us this advice “put one foot slowly in front of the other (or “polepole” in Swahili), and you’ll reach the summit. We made Uhuru Peak (19,341 ft.) at 7:30 in the morning in time to see the sunrise over Africa.
Going “polepole” has been our mantra at David Howell and Company, where for 40 years, we’ve had the pleasure of working with over three hundred and fifty museums from around the world, making products for their stores. We’ve made close to ten thousand designs. A large number, but not surprising, if you consider that those museums have thousands of astonishing pieces in their collections. All of these pieces of art have voices, and we listen to them when we design. They are our inspiration.
