In the early 1970s, the MTA adopted a uniform graphic standard. The designer was Massimo Vignelli. Vignelli was the head of the New York office for Unimark. The design approach taken by the firm reflected two major trends, the International Typographic Style (sans serif fonts with type organized asymmetrically along with mathematical grids) and the American business world's penchant for "graphic identity". The result bought order out of chaos.
