French Impressionist Edgar Degas created his Little Dancer, Aged Fourteen in 1881. The statue caused quite an unfavorable commotion when it was exhibited because it was considered too life-like. This realism inspired countless sculptors and his influence shaped artistic ideals well into the 20th Century.
