“A Wise Old Owl”, an English-language nursery rhyme:
There was an owl liv'd in an oak
The more he heard, the less he spoke
The less he spoke, the more he heard
O, if men were all like that wise bird
Since time immemorial, the owl has been a symbol of wisdom. Athena, the ancient Greek goddess of wisdom, had a screech owl as a companion. The owl came to symbolize Athena, which is one of the reasons it is found on many of the coins of ancient Greece. One of the most famous is the silver “tetra drachma”.
