The San Francisco cable car system is the world's last manually operated cable car system.  A gripman starts and stops the car by opening and closing the grip around a moving cable. Of the 23 lines established between 1873 and 1890, only three remain. Climbing Russian Hill, the Powel-Hyde cable car has a stunning view of  Alcatraz and the Marin headlands.
