The Chrysler Building is one of the most famous Art Deco skyscrapers in America. Located at the intersection of 42nd Street and Lexington Avenue, it pierces the sky at 1,047 feet high. It was briefly the world’s largest building when it opened in May 1930, but it was surpassed in 1931 by the Empire State Building. Its most outstanding feature is the distinctive profile of its terraced crown, composed of seven radiating terraced arches. Its outer ornamentation has many car-themed designs, such as the eagle gargoyles that are replicas of 1929 Chrysler hood ornaments. The V-shaped lighting inserts in the steel crown and floodlights on mast arms allow for dramatic lighting effects.
