Edgar Degas, born in Paris in 1834 was the master of drawing the human figure in motion. He is best known for his paintings, drawings, and bronzes of ballerinas and of racehorses. Ballet dancers became Edgar Degas’s favorite theme in the 1870s. His paintings often show complex combinations of dancers in movement and at rest. To arrive at these scenes, Degas sketched from live models in his studio. This bookmark is inspired by one of those sketches.
