General Robert E. Lee Metal Bookmark Robert E. Lee was a Confederate general whose military genius was a major force in keeping the Confederacy alive through the four years of the Civil War. He was made commander in chief of all Confederate armies in February 1865, two months before he was forced to surrender to General Grant at Appomattox Court House. He is remembered for his masterful strategies, and his campaigns are still studied in military schools as models.
