The theatrical world's most famous symbol, tragic and comic masks, date back to the time of the ancient theater when all actors appeared masked and when different masks were associated with different characters. The mouth openings of these masks were unnaturally large and shaped like a bell-mouth in order to reinforce the voice of the speaker.
